Scale, direction and where the pattern meets a seam. Get those right and a striped piece looks drawn. Get any one of them wrong and the same cloth on the same frame looks like a slipcover. This is the part of a commission that is decided on paper, long before anything is cut.

A narrow stripe on a large curved volume reads as noise from three metres. A wide band on a small piece reads as beachwear. The band is agreed against the size of the piece and the distance it will be seen from.

Direction

A stripe that runs with a curve describes the volume. A stripe that runs across it fights the volume. On the Saint-Tropez the pattern wraps the volume, and the contrast piping traces the curve alongside it.

Where two panels meet, the position of the stripe is a decision rather than an accident. It is agreed before the cloth is cut, which is the only moment it can be agreed.

Saint Objets works with striped upholstery on made to order pieces, indoors and out. Because the piece is built for one room, the pattern is planned as part of the construction rather than fitted to a finished frame. That is what allows a stripe to land symmetrically on a curve and to continue cleanly across a seam. On outdoor pieces the stripe is specified as part of the upholstery for the setting, and the studio states the construction of the chosen cloth before anything is cut.

Seam placement is the detail that separates the two outcomes. On a curved piece the cloth has to be cut so the bands land where the eye expects them, and on a piece with more than one panel the position of the pattern at the join is a decision, not an accident. This costs cutting time and cloth, which is why it is rare on furniture that was not made for a specific room. Indoors, striped upholstery is selected from curated European collections, including French and Belgian mills, chosen for hand, colour depth and the daily life of the room.

Materials.

Stripe direction, band width and seam placement are recorded on the drawing and confirmed at material sign off, so what is approved is what is cut.

Contrast piping is specified alongside the stripe. On a curved piece it is what keeps the silhouette legible once the pattern is on it.

For high use settings the studio can specify upholstery with documented performance characteristics, including abrasion requirements and care considerations, according to the brief.
