In Dubai the sun flattens colour for most of the day, and a plain outdoor piece can read as a pale mass from across a terrace. A stripe holds its drawing under that light, because the eye reads the rhythm before it reads the colour. That is why the stripe belongs to beach clubs, cabanas and yacht decks, and why it is the pattern Saint Objets chose for the Saint-Tropez sunbed.

Commission a PieceSaint Objets is a French furniture studio in Dubai. Designed in Paris, crafted in the Emirates. Outdoor pieces are made to order, which means the stripe is not a print applied at the end. The scale of the band, the direction it runs, and where it meets a seam are decided while the silhouette is still being drawn. Stripe scale is the part most people underestimate. A narrow stripe on a large curved volume reads as noise from three metres away. A wide band on a small piece reads as a beach towel.
The Saint-Tropez band was drawn wide enough to stay legible from the far side of a pool, which is the distance the piece is usually seen from. Direction matters as much as width. On the Saint-Tropez the stripe wraps the volume, running over the seat and continuing down the base, so the pattern reads as one piece of cloth rather than as panels. The contrast piping then traces the curve and closes the drawing. This is the difference between a striped object and a piece that was designed striped.
Outdoor upholstery is selected for the setting, with the studio specifying cloth suited to sun, humidity and daily terrace use according to the brief. Both Saint-Tropez colourways, Cap Sand and Romarin, carry the stripe as part of the upholstery specification rather than as a finish applied at the end, and the studio states the construction of the chosen cloth before the order is confirmed.
The contrast piping is a separate decision from the stripe. It is what keeps a large curved outdoor volume from reading as soft or shapeless, and it is finished by hand along the full curve of the piece.
Where a project asks for it, the studio can specify upholstery with documented performance characteristics, including abrasion requirements and care considerations, according to the brief.
