DESCRIPTION
The goddess and the shell
Aphrodite rose from the sea and came ashore on a shell. Apelles painted her wringing the water from her hair, Praxiteles carved her at Knidos, the first goddess shown without her robe, and Botticelli, under her Roman name, set her on the scallop shell that every visitor to the Uffizi knows. The armchair takes the shell. It is one low, continuous curve from arm to arm, and the velvet is gathered over all of it in fine pleats, the back, the arms, the base, so the surface carries the ridges of a shell and the seat, left smooth, is its heart. The base is recessed and the chair appears to rest on the floor, as a shell rests on sand. It is a chair for sitting sideways in, with the legs up.
The seat
Layered foams of different densities, shaped so the seat has the feel of memory foam while holding its line. Our spring seat, developed and prototyped in the studio, can be fitted on request for a deeper, slower sit.
The fabric
