What to Demand for a Nursery.
For a nursery, a few things are worth demanding in writing before anything is built:
- Solid wood rather than particleboard or fibreboard, the top formaldehyde source in kids' furniture.
- OEKO-TEX certified fabric.
- No added fluorinated stain repellents and no added flame retardants.
The Three Chemicals to Ask About.
There are three chemicals a parent furnishing a nursery should actually worry about, and a clear answer you want to hear for each.
- Formaldehyde. It off-gasses from the glues in engineered wood: plywood, fibreboard and particleboard, the most common hidden source in low-cost children's furniture. The reassuring answer is that the frame and case are solid wood, and any board used is a documented low-emission board with paperwork to show it. The answer that should alarm you is vague talk of "wood" that never distinguishes solid timber from glued board.
- Fluorinated stain repellents. These coatings are sprayed onto fabric to shrug off spills, exactly what you do not want on a surface a baby mouths and crawls on. The reassuring answer is no fluorinated stain treatment, with cleanability coming from the weave and fibre instead. The answer that should alarm you is "it is treated to be stain-proof" with no idea what the treatment is.
- Added flame retardants. Chemical retardants are sometimes dosed into the cushioning and the fabric. The reassuring answer is none added to the cushioning or the cover, with any fire performance met through the applicable requirement for the setting rather than a chemical dosed into the fill. The answer that should alarm you is silence, or "it meets a flammability requirement" with no material named.
Ask for the Evidence, by Layer.
"Ask for the certificate" is only useful if you know what to ask for and against which layer. Demand it layer by layer:
- For the finished piece, a low chemical emissions test report .
- For the cover, OEKO-TEX certified fabric, and a clear statement of the fibre and any treatment.
A seller who cannot say what applies, and to which layer, is asking you to trust a word.
Two Actions Most Guides Leave Out.
- Choose water-based finishes over solvent-heavy ones on any wood or metal, because the finish off-gasses into the room for weeks.
- Air out a new piece before your baby uses the space: unwrap it and let it stand in a well-ventilated room for a good stretch before the nursery is in daily use. Off-gassing is strongest at the start and fades with time and airflow.
