Made to Order Is Arithmetic, Not a Slogan

Made to Order Is Arithmetic, Not a Slogan.

No stock is the whole argument.

A sofa that waits on a warehouse floor was built for a buyer who may never come. A sofa cut only after a room has been measured for it was built for one who did. Everything else in this note, the short journey, the re-covering, the years in use, follows from that difference.

Why No Stock Means Less Waste.

The honest case for made-to-order is not a slogan, it is arithmetic. Mass furniture is produced to a forecast: factories build ahead of demand, ship to warehouses, and whatever does not sell is discounted, liquidated or scrapped. Saint Objets works the other way. Nothing is cut or upholstered until a client has chosen it, so a piece is built for a specific home rather than for a guess.

Holding no stock removes the waste built into that forecast:

Made Locally, Delivered Directly.

Where a piece is made matters as much as when. Saint Objets furniture is made locally, in the studio's own atelier in the Emirates, not imported from factories across the world. When it is finished, it travels from the atelier directly to the client's home.

That is a short journey, so a Saint Objets piece plainly carries far less transport than furniture shipped in from overseas. It is not a claim on a certificate, just the simple geography of making something near the person who will live with it.

Built to Last, Not to Replace.

The larger lever is longevity. The most sustainable piece of furniture is the one you keep, and a frame built to be re-covered rather than thrown away can outlast several trend cycles, so a piece is kept, not replaced.

Each piece is made to order with materials chosen to stay healthy and last:

A Studio, By Appointment.

None of this is a marketing position bolted on after the fact. It is the personal conviction of Sarah Koben, our Creative Director, who built the studio around the belief that a piece should be made only when it is wanted, made close to home, and made to last and to be lived with safely.

That durability is also why we work as a studio, by appointment, not a warehouse of ready stock. It lets you specify a piece precisely, in the size and fabric your room actually needs, so it fits and lasts instead of being replaced. The same discipline underpins our made-to-order furniture in Dubai.

Frequently asked questions.

Is made-to-order furniture actually more sustainable, or is that greenwashing?

The saving is concrete, not a label. Saint Objets holds no stock: no piece is built until it is ordered, so there is no unsold surplus to discount or scrap. Each piece is made locally in the atelier in the Emirates and travels a short way to the client, rather than being shipped in from overseas, so it plainly carries less transport. Combined with re-coverable construction, that means less furniture reaches landfill over time.

What makes Saint Objets furniture toxic-free?

Our pieces use healthy, non-toxic materials chosen for low chemical emissions indoors, because Sarah Koben, our Creative Director, cares deeply about preserving a healthy home environment. Fabrics come from curated European collections and are OEKO-TEX certified.

Where is Saint Objets furniture designed and made?

Saint Objets is a French furniture studio in Dubai. Pieces are designed in Paris and made to order locally, in the studio's own atelier in the Emirates, then delivered directly to the client's home; our rugs are made by hand in India. Nothing is produced in advance. No piece waits on a floor for a buyer.
